Product Review: Tesco Red velvet cake

Tesco Red Velvet cake

Every now and again I get asked to do a taste test on a food product and I have to say it doesn’t take much arm twisting, especially when it’s something as yummy as a Red Velvet cake. This one, from Tesco’s Finest range couldn’t have come at a better time. It was Beau’s birthday. She wasn’t having her party for a few weeks so I thought this was a great way for her to have a cake on the big day itself and then I could make her a shaped cake for the party. Good plan? Definitely!

We had what we call a Pizza picnic. It’s where we have pizza delivered and sit on blankets in the living room (coz lets face it pizza is mess with my two!) and we watch some kids TV or a film together. We’ve learnt not to watch ‘You’ve been framed’ as we spend more time laughing than eating. When the pizza was all gone Darcey and I got the cake ready with candles and surprised Beau with it in the dark. She loved it.

The cake itself is a deep red coloured sponge with three layers of cream cheese frosting. I love cream cheese frosting. It says it will serve 14 but we pretty much devoured the whole thing for pudding that night and then with breakfast the next day. I should point out that I cut a large slice! I meant to save a piece to take a photo of how it looks on the inside one we had daylight  but I completely forgot as it was eaten up too quickly, but it looks really impressive.

I have to say that this is a real show stopper cake. At just £10 it’s perfect for so many occassions. It looks good, it tastes good and it won’t break the bank. What more could you ask for?
